Why go Organic?
For a quick introduction to organic practices, click HERE. You will see immediately that it is better for our bodies and our environment. It is so easy now, people are even buying organic food online.
The USDA National Organic Program (NOP) defines organic as follows:
Organic food is produced by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations. Organic meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products come from animals that are given no antibiotics or growth hormones. Organic food is produced without using most conventional pesticides; fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge; bio engineering; or ionizing radiation. Before a product can be labeled “organic,” a Government-approved certifier inspects the farm where the food is grown to make sure the farmer is following all the rules necessary to meet USDA organic standards. Companies that handle or process organic food before it gets to your local supermarket or restaurant must be certified, too.
But Organic Costs More, You Say.
Yes. Simply put, buying organic food does tend to cost a little bit more. This is because Organic Farms are typically smaller and do not mass produce their food with the use of pesticides, growth hormones or genetically modified plants or animals. Their rewards are produced my their efforts, not by chemicals. The food is actually handled by the farmers and not the farmers’ machinery.
The Organic Farming Research Foundation explained it by saying: “The organic price tag more closely reflects the true cost of growing the food: substituting labor and intensive management for chemicals, the health and environmental costs of which are borne by society.”
Organic is Readily Available Now.
In Decades past, “Organic” was not a word that was found in grocery stores, markets or egg farms. The only way to ensure the safety of your food was to grow your own. This is not always an option, though. Luckily, now we have better control of our food-chain and more and more options are available to us every day! The food industry has better labeling and more strict guidelines than ever before. We can even order our organic groceries online.
Buying Organic Food Online Is Now Easy.
If you are not in a position to grow your own, or buy from your local farmer, don’t despair! Organic varieties of our favorite foods has become readily available. There are many brands that are available online. Many common brands now have Organic options readily available to us, such as Quaker. Even Fresh Organic Vegetables are available online. If you were not aware that these awesome foods were available online, you need to go check out all the varieties that are available, like the “stir it up” bundle, or the “weekly greens” bundle.
These also make GREAT GIFTS! Also check out the “Baby Vegetables Basket”, which is a MUST TRY!!
Keeping them Fresh.
One of the biggest complaints I hear from people about buying fresh, organic foods is that they do not stay fresh for very long. True, they are not treated with preservatives and waxy chemicals that keep them looking better, longer, but there are solutions. With the technology of the world today, there are simple and affordable ways to keep your produce looking and tasting great for longer than you would expect. I am saying that your Avacado half really can last more than a couple of hours and your celery will not go limp in under a week. You need to look at the solutions that are available and decide which will work for you. No need to get an avacado saver if you hate avacados. If you LOVE garlic, then extend its’ life with a garlic saver!
. . . And if you want to keep your veggie drawer full of goodies, you need to try the drawer liners.
They will keep your lettuce crisp, lemons and limes mold-free and stop your mushrooms from mushing.
I know I threw a lot of information at you all at once, but I am really a believer that Organic is better. Better for You, Me and our Planet. If you want to increase your nutritional intake and support sustainability of our Planet, you can buy organic, without breaking your bank or wasting your hard earned cash by tossing spoiled food away.
